The photo we have been waiting for: Anahita on her 70 mile trip from Hout Bay to Saldanha. Perfect sailing conditions, a decent swell, 20 knots of wind from astern. Anahita did the journey with an average of almost 7 knots, reaching 9.4 knots in the surf.
Anahita moored on the jetty of the Saldanha Bay Yacht Club. The jetty is supposed to be used for short stays only; normally, we are on one of the swing moorings in the background. When South Westerly winds create swell in the lagoon, we move to one of the moorings of the Small Craft Harbor, just around the corner.
Typical view at sunset: our inflatable catamaran (imported from Austria) and the dinghi, our neighbor "Elegance", and, far in the background, the industrial complex of Saldanha Steel.
The Club house of the Saldanha Bay Yacht Club. During the week, everything is very quite here. This calm is only interrupted by a few training yachts of the various local sailing schools. On weekends, two dozen members of the club come for a race and a brai (barbecue).
Kraalbai is located in the heart of the national park of Langebaan, about 8 miles south of Saldanha. Navigation in the park is only possible at high tide - and at low tide, we had no room for a fish between our keel and the sandy ground, even in the deepest spot of Kraalbai. The bay offers a long sandy beach and the water is warm enough for a swim. Unfortunately, yachts are now charged ZAR 120 per night, even at anchor.
Sometimes we treat ourselves with a visit to Club Mykonos Langebaan. The club is a holiday village in the style of a Greek island. The atmosphere is very relaxed and for a fair price (ZAR 85 [USD 13] per night for a monohull), we are moored to a jetty in a safe harbor, can have a bath with our kids in the heated pool, and have our sundowner beer at the beach bar.
End of February we sailed back to Hout Bay. A nice little trip with one highlight: at sunset, the wind died off and suddenly a whale swam around our boat for a couple of minutes - beautiful!
